Merlin Sheldrake - How Fungi Make our Worlds

Fungi, a diverse and largely unseen kingdom, sustain nearly all living systems through ancient mycorrhizal networks. Despite their critical role, climate change and conservation efforts largely overlook them, focusing on plants and animals. This oversight is detrimental, as destroying fungal networks accelerates climate change, biodiversity loss, and disrupts vital global nutrient cycles.

Biologist Merlin Sheldrake, author of *Entangled Life*, emphasizes fungi's critical importance. He discusses the visionary work of the Society for the Protection of Underground Networks (SPUN) in mapping and protecting global mycorrhizal communities, alongside research on carbon and nutrient flow within these networks. This keynote was delivered at the 2024 Bioneers Conference.

Colette Pichon Battle - Expanding Our Movements for Climate Justice

Colette Pichon Battle, a renowned climate justice advocate and attorney from Bayou Liberty, Louisiana, empowers frontline communities. She helps them develop climate strategies to responsibly manage their water, energy, and land.

Drawing on decades of experience, Colette exposes the root causes of environmental inequities. She argues that true climate justice must encompass gender and migrant justice, linking them to fundamental human rights for clean air, water, land, and sustainable energy.

This keynote talk was delivered at the 2024 Bioneers Conference.

Building a "next system" to supplant the current systemic drivers of our economic and political cris

A panel discussion, hosted by The Democracy Collaborative, explores integrating Indigenous wisdom into a "next system" to address economic and political crises. This new system would center life and nature, drawing from non-capitalist social and economic forms.

The panel features Freida Jacques (Turtle Clan Mother, Onondaga Nation), Jeff Corntassel (Cherokee Nation, University of Victoria), and Miki'ala Catalfano (Hawai'i resident, co-director of Native Roots Network). Stephanie Gutierrez (Oglala Sioux Tribe, founder of Hope Nation LLC) moderates, with Joe Guinan (President, The Democracy Collaborative) providing the introduction.

Regenerate Nature #shorts

To shift from a linear 'take-make-waste' economy to a circular design, we must support natural processes and allow nature to thrive. Our focus should move beyond simply doing less harm to actively improving the environment.

The Ellen MacArthur Foundation, an international charity, promotes the circular economy. This design-driven model eliminates waste and pollution, circulates products and materials, and regenerates nature. Thank you for watching.

Power transmission lines damaging sacred sites and San Pedro River

The Center for Biological Diversity advocates for green energy that respects biodiversity and Indigenous cultures. In February 2024, we took significant action in Arizona. We filed an injunction with the Tohono O'odham Nation and San Carlos Apache Tribe to stop wind-power transmission lines damaging sacred sites and the fragile San Pedro River.

We also achieved a major victory with Navajo allies against proposed Black Mesa hydropower projects. These projects threatened aquifers, prehistoric sites, and Mexican spotted owl habitat. This win establishes a new nationwide policy granting Tribes veto power over permits targeting their land. More on this victory: insideclimatenews.org.

On Growth and Form: Ecology and Evolution of Columnar Cacti

Join world-renowned researcher Dr. Alberto Burquez for a free presentation on giant columnar cacti, including Arizona's iconic saguaros. Dr. Burquez will detail his research on their evolutionary history, ecology, adaptations to the Sonoran Desert, and the effects of climate change.

A researcher at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), Dr. Burquez is a co-author of "The Saguaro Cactus: A Natural History" and an expert in columnar cacti population ecology and genetics. His work also covers plant-animal relationships and land-use change in the Sonoran Desert.

Indigenous-led Conservation: Hope for the Future of the Planet

Indigenous communities continue to battle "fortress conservation" efforts that displace them and restrict access to their ancestral lands. This approach often conflicts with their traditional stewardship, despite Indigenous peoples being vital guardians of the Earth.

Though making up just over 6% of the global population, Indigenous peoples steward 25% of the Earth's surface and 40% of intact ecosystems. They protect 80% of the planet's remaining biodiversity, a direct result of their profound relationships with their territories.

Animal Mimics

Distinguishing between genuine and deceptive appearances can be challenging, especially in the natural world.

Animal mimics often employ clever strategies, making it difficult to discern whether they are truly what they seem or merely imposters.

Power transmission lines damaging sacred sites and San Pedro River

The Center for Biological Diversity, a Tucson-based nonprofit, advocates for green energy that respects biodiversity and Indigenous cultures. February 2024 brought key victories in Arizona. An injunction was filed with the Tohono O’odham Nation and San Carlos Apache Tribe to halt wind-power transmission lines damaging sacred sites and the San Pedro River. More: Twitter, ENR.

A significant win with Navajo allies, backed by 7,000 supporters, stopped Black Mesa hydropower projects threatening aquifers, prehistoric sites, and wildlife. This established a nationwide policy granting Tribes veto power over permits on their land. Details: Inside Climate News. As the Center's Russ McSpadden noted, "industrial energy plans are just greenwashing" without community consent.
